THE NEON HIGHWAY
After lunch John and I were met by a van that picked us up and drove us over to Battalion Headquarter in Hoescht Village which was right outside of Frankfurt where we received out Battalion in processing. After shuffling through this we were picked up again and drove over to Gibbs Kaserne in Frankfurt, West Germany. Gibbs Kaserne was the German's Gestapo Headquarters of Frankfurt but now was a military base where mostly Army Military Police Units were stationed. Charlie Company would be the only Signal company on the post.
Now,
having gone through two in processing's we arrived at Charlie Company
after five o'clock and all the units clerks had gone home for the
night. The rest of the company was out at what they called the Patio
for a field problem so we didn't really get to meet many people that
first night.
I
was put in a room by myself and John was put in a room at the end of
the hallway on the first floor. My room would be temporary because only
NCO's got rooms by themselves. After getting all my stuff stored away
temporary, I headed down to John's room where he was getting to meet
some of the guys that had been there for awhile. One was McChesney. I
liked McChesney a lot because he seemed like a really cool sort person.
John though loathed the guy even back in South Carolina. So when I
knocked on the door and McChesney opened it we greeted each other with
smiles and hugs.
"You
got stationed here too," I said to him and my heart brightened for a
moment because now I had someone I could relate too. John was a couple

room, he was a short timer, already out processing and getting ready to
go back home to Indiana.
Indiana was the one to suggest "we should take the new guys out to the red light district and show them around."
Neither

heading out the gate of Gibbs Kaserne, and getting on a street car and

German transportation in just few minutes with little wait. They were
efficient, fast and they met their schedules. Just don't be late.
The
bar Indiana and McChesney would show us that night would be Meyers
Bierhause which was downtown Frankfurt. There they had phones at every
table and if you wanted you could call another table and say hi. The
